Our mission is to improve the effectiveness and efficiency of clinical care, enrich the healthcare experience, and advance the wellbeing of patients and their families through the use of the Internet and related technologies. This is accomplished through multidisciplinary scientific study and integrative technologic development that will establish intelligent informatics systems, pair healthcare participants and digital medicine symbiotically, attain informed and responsible patient engagement, appropriate medical resources effectively, and pioneer real-time evidence generation productively, all serving to improve the quality of life of patients and their families.

IC Sciences Investigates Application of Narrative Sciences for Medical Informatics Instruments

Boston, MA - (April 16, 2008) IC Sciences Corporation announced today a new initiative exploring narrative techniques for designing and developing informatics instruments used in medical practice and healthcare 2.0 markets. Narrative science, an emerging field that draws upon the cognitive and anthropologic sciences, is founded upon a theoretical and experimental foundation regarding human intelligence's reliance on narrative for richly conveying context and thinking, shaping our interpretations and therapeutically processing experiences. By providing a view into individual mindset, narrative can provide a critical mechanism for personalizing informatics interventions and thus more effectively engaging patients and clinicians.

In keeping with the Company's strategy to develop a new, more potent generation of digital informatics instruments, narrative science complements the repertoire of cognitive, complexity and informatics disciplines being applied for this purpose. IC Sciences is collaborating with others in the industry to synthesize these sciences into an integrated system for investigating, designing, constructing, testing and deploying healthcare informatics interventions.

The Company's latest scientific brief, "Narrative Techniques in Medicine; Translating Cognitive Sciences into Potent Informatics Instruments," explains the importance and relevance of narrative; citing "[Narrative techniques] are powerful tools for understanding patients' thinking and thus optimally engaging them, which can contribute to improved outcomes. They are effective in eliciting patient histories, which improves diagnostic accuracy, patient-provider relationships, and therapeutic effects. Narrative techniques can also provide structure for social networking communities; in the case of patients these narratives can offer a superior level of patient education, decision-making, and self-care support. Narrative techniques also provide a potentially richer way of assessing patient adherence, satisfaction, and the effectiveness of clinical services and interventions. Finally, narrative adds a layer of depth to online market research."

Dr. Eleanor Herriman, Executive Director of the Division of Medical Information Sciences (DMIS), Executive Vice President and Chief Science Officer of IC Sciences, commented, "We view narrative as a critical new device for developing cognitively potent healthcare informatics instruments. Effectively engaging patients and physicians in our information overloaded world requires new techniques based on advances from the neurosciences. This publication aims to raise awareness about this new instrument, as well as to stimulate exploration and application within physician, e-health, and therapeutics marketplaces."

The narrative report is the latest in the DMIS Medical Informatics Review series, which focuses on how the cognitive, complexity and informatics sciences can be used in a variety of "indications," such as patient-physician partnering, patient medication adherence, and generating real world clinical evidence for performance management and personalized medicine.

Narrative Techniques in Medicine incorporates work from a variety of researchers and practitioners, including Professor Trisha Greenhalgh of University College London, David Snowden of Cognitive Edge, and leading physician author Jerome Groopman (How Doctors Think).
